Career Fair Tips - Dress Tips

Females

  • Attire for women can vary depending on the organization.
  • For formal business environments, women are encouraged to wear suits in plain, neutral colors or understated plaids.
  • Blouses should not have frills, ruffles, straps, or plunging necklines.
  • Basic pumps, polished, with a medium to low heel are appropriate.
  • Dresses or coordinated skirts and blouses are appropriate attire for less formal atmospheres.
  • Do not wear dangling earrings or bracelets. Stud earrings and gold or pearl necklaces can be appropriate.
  • Go light on perfume and make-up.
  • For women with long hair, you may choose to pull it back so it is out of your face.

Males

  • For a formal business interview, it is recommended that men wear dark or gray suits in solids, pinstripes, or subtle plaids.
  • Your dress shirt should be a solid color, preferably white, cream, or pale blue.
  • Be sure that the shirt is ironed.
  • A variety of ties may be worn, keeping in mind that muted colors in solid, stripes, or small patterns are preferred. It is best not to wear a bold, flashy tie to an interview.
  • For a less formal environment, appropriate dress may consist of a blazer or sport coat, or simply a dress shirt and pants.
  • Make sure your shoes are polished.
